Thinners are volatile chemical liquids, used as dilute paint. These liquids can also considerably improve paint properties. Thinners have main role in paint applicability, the dehydration time of paint layers and final properties of paints. The selection of a proper thinner makes influences on viscosity, brushing condition, dehydration speed and spraying potentiality of paint. The major properties that must be considered in selecting for a suitable thinner are: 1) solubility 2) evaporation speed 3) boiling point 4) flash point 5) toxicity.

The other physical and chemical properties of thinners including density, color, moisture, pH, refractive index, and nonvolatile material content also must be considered for selecting a suitable thinner.

In paints formulation, resins have normally polymeric and organic nature and do not display in crystalline structure. These materials dissolve in thinners and the density amount would be dependent on the resin and thinner types also their respective contents. Thinners must be selected regarding their color.

Washing (instant) thinner: Used to wash and clean industrial machinery (includes the 2000, 5000, 10000, 12000, 15000, and 20000 grades)

Oil thinner or white spirit: Used to dilute different types of oil paint.

Epoxy thinner: For diluting different epoxy paints.

Furnace thinner: It is highly soluble and is used to dilute furnace paints. It is provided in the A and B types.

Pool thinner: Used to dilute swimming pool paints.
